How a system is connected to the grid

The procedure did not change in 2026: apply to the EAC, wait for assessment and authorisation, sign the agreement. Only the scheme on the form differs.

This is our explanation of a document written by someone else, and we can be wrong. It is not legal or tax advice: the decision is made by the authority.

A rooftop system does not stand on its own: for it to export surplus and for the meter to count correctly, it is connected to the grid through an application. This article is about the procedure, not about what happens to the surplus afterwards — that is the neighbouring article.

What the procedure consists of

Four steps, the same for domestic and non-domestic consumers:

  • an application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) with the mandatory documents;
  • assessment of the application;
  • authorisation;
  • signing of the agreement.

None of this is done retroactively: the connection is arranged before the system starts exporting.

What changed in 2026

The procedure itself did not. The previous schemes closed to new applicants at the end of 2025, but the application still goes to the EAC and still passes the same four steps. What differs is the settlement scheme ticked on the form: from 2026 that is the self-consumption regime, and surplus is sold under net billing.

So guides written before 2026 remain correct about the procedure and are already wrong about the name of the scheme and the settlement terms.

Documents

The list is set by the EAC and lives in full on the form itself. What is known: electricity bills are attached to the application — they show the consumption of the property.

We do not publish the exact set of documents or the assessment times: they are in none of the sources we have read, and an invented list would send you collecting the wrong papers.

Who files the application

Either the owner or the installer can file it — that is a matter of agreement, not a rule. Settle it before the work starts: "who submits the grid connection application" is one of the questions worth asking every company you ask for a quote.

How firm this account is

The procedure is described from the European Commission portal on RES support in Cyprus, and confirmed in practice: the 2026 regime changed the scheme ticked on the form, not the procedure. We have not read the EAC's own regulation, so assessment times and the full list of documents are not here.

The limits of the previous scheme — the capacity cap and the split of applicants into categories — are deliberately not carried over: they belong to a programme closed to new applicants, and repeating them as current would be wrong.

Before you apply, open the EAC form: it is the source of the current list of documents.
